Abstract
ABSTRACT
Javanese language is the biggest regional language used in Indonesia, which should be preserved, cultivated and developed. There are approximately 70 millions people who consider Javanese language as their mother tongue and use it in their daily communication. However, the language that has various levels of speech has been growing slowly. This is an impact of the government policy about Indonesian language as the National language. Then the government socializes to the Indonesian people to use it as National language, which is used as a means of communication. Therefore, the use of Javanese speech levels as one of the aspects of Javanese language has decreased. Moreover, many young Javanese generations do not use it in their daily communication. They often make mistakes when they use Javanese speech levels.
Based on those phenomena, this study was conducted to know the use of Javanese speech levels used in Pondok Pesantren Subulul Hudaa Nganjuk. This study focuses on Javanese speech levels used by students to their teachers. The writer hopes that her study will be useful, since it will give information about Javanese culture including the etiquette in communication, especially for researcher who wants to investigate in the same field or who has different culture and interest in studying this topic.
The descriptive-qualitative method is used to conduct this research, in which the data will be presented in the words form to describe Javanese speech levels used by students to their teachers. To get scientific data, the writer uses interview, field note, observation and tape recorder. Then the result of the study are that students of Pondok Pesantren Subulul Hudaa used Javanese speech levels both in formal and informal situation, and the students of Pondok Pesantren Subulul Hudaa used krama speech level in communicating with their teacher as respect form. They wanted to preserve Javanese culture with the use of Javanese speech levels especially krama speech level. On the other hand, ngoko and madya are rarely used by the students in communicating with their teachers, because they want to appreciate and respect them as old people. In short, they use Javanese speech levels to get intimacy, to become real Javanese, and as habit to speak Javanese to other people.
Finally after discussing all the problems of the study, the writer proposed some suggestion that it is important for Javanese people to use Javanese language. Then, it is also useful for them to follow Javanese speech levels ‘'Unggah-imggiihing Basa " of Javanese language based on the principles, though they live in multilingual community. They also have to use Javanese language for its preservation. Furthermore, the writer suggests to Javanese people, especially for young Javanese generations to use their language appropriately. At last, the writer suggests that there will be other researchers who study about Javanese language in other aspects.
