Magazine is one part of communication in the form of written language used to inform the up to date news weekly or monthly. This mass media has an essential role in the modem life, even it has been considered as one of the factors which determine the process of social, cultural and political change. Jaya Baya magazine is selected because as Javanese magazine it serves the language forum and helps to relate various parts of the social system by gathering and disseminating valuable information. Furthermore, Jaya Baya is intended to help those coming from overseas and all people interested in Javanese to get in touch its culture.
Based on those, the research problems of this thesis are; l) What are the types of Javanese speech levels mostly used in short stories of Jaya Baya magazine?, 2) How are the Javanese speech levels used in short stories of Jaya Baya magazine?. This research used descriptive qualitative design. The data are taken from “Kodrat”, “Soinah”, “Balapan Mubeng Desa”, “Maskumambang’ad "Minggat" short stories published on September-October 2004 by Jaya Baya magazines.
It is found that the Javanese speech level mostly used on short stories of Jaya Baya magazine is ngoko. Which is the lowest speech level of Javanese language and it uses intimately in daily conversation, Madya use if the speaker respect toward hearer but the respect sense in the middle rank. The respect sense is not only in the use of krama vocabulary but the use of mak, mbak, kang and mas to addressee the speech partner. Krama is used to have more respectfully and high politeness beside that they don’t know well each other.
