An analysis on setting of Kisah Seribu Satu Siang dan Malam by Naguib Mahfouz

ABSTRACT

Kisah Seribu Satu Siang dan Malam is a novel that contain of the inspiration from treasury wealth of Arabic classical Story. It is a mesmerizing political religious novel that gives the writer’s opinion and also his criticism to the corrupt authority and love to bloodshed, dirty bureaucracy, crafty and greedy entrepreneur and also the hypocrite intellect who pretend to be a moralist.

In this research, the writer analyzes the kinds of setting that are used in the novel and also its’ influence to the character. Setting refers to time and place in which an action occurs and also to the prevailing political, moral, and social attitudes of the society in which the characters alive.

Research problem of this study are: 1. what kinds of setting are used in the novel, 2. how do setting influence the characters. The research objective of this study are finding the setting that are used in the novel and knowing the way how setting influences the characters.

Based on its method, literary criticism is divided into three, those are inductive, judicial and impressionistic. The research method that is used by the writer is inductive literary criticism because she wants to explain the part of the elements of literary based on the phenomena that exist in the novel objectively.

The writer also presents the related literature about setting that consist of: definition of setting, the types of setting that consist of neutral and spiritual setting, the elements of setting, and the function of setting so the reader can read the theory that are related with the analysis of this thesis.

The writer starts her writing by reading the theories of the setting. After reading the theories she reads the novel. Then, after finishing reading the novel she starts to analyze the setting of the novel by categorizing types of the setting used in the novel. Then she analyzes the influence of the setting to the characters.

After finishing analyzing the novel, the writer knows that there are two types of setting that is used in this novel, those are neutral and spiritual setting. The author of the novel does not mention the place setting clearly but he just mention that the story is happened in a district that have many kinds of season, those are winter, spring, autumn, etc.

The writers found the social setting that influences the characters of the characters. The influences is drawn in the novel through the problems exist and also the solve. Finally, the problem make the character aware of his mistakes and repents and corrects all of his mistakes. He changes his view of life from bad character become good character.
