Abstract

ABSTRACT

1(1 the season of General Election, every party in a country always busy to reach participants as many as possible, so that the party will be the ,winner in the General Election. It also happens in Indonesia especially on the late of campaign days. They did it in some ways. One of them by using pamphlets. Pamphlets of campaign are one way to establish campaign messages to society, in order to reach as many people as possible and persuade them to support the goal of the campaign. A normal way of publishing pamphlets is through political parties. Because, this form is cheaper than other media, such as electronic media. Moreover, the pamphlets of campaign in Malang more various than the other cities. This distracted the researcher to analyze speech acts in written form. Then, it hopefully gives contribution to language and linguistic study, especially on speech act study on written form, especially in pamphlets of campaign in Malang in the General Election 2004.

This study used descriptive qualitative design which is to describe the speech acts. The data were in the form of words were collected from pamphlets of campaign in the General Election 2004 which are found along the road in Malang. They consist of 36 different pamphlets from five political parties of General Election 2004, they are Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDIP), Golongan Karya (Golkar), Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN), Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) ص Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS).

The researcher analyzed them using descriptive method that she described the data that in the form of words by describing them. In doing this analysis, she collected some pamphlets, wrote the written words of pamphlets and translating into English. Then, she analyzed them based on the problems of the study. After that, she checked and rechecked them with the theories and two informants.

From the data, it was found that speech acts used in pamphlets of campaign in Malang in the General Election 2004 were illocutionary acts based on Searle’s theory, they are assertive, directive, commissive and expressive illocutionary acts, Whereas, the persuasive language that are found are rationalization, identification, suggestion, conformity, controlling audiences’ emotion, showing good character and credibility. Also, it used collective first person, used favorable adjectives and action words.

Finally, the writer drew conclusions and suggested to other researchers to . analyze the language of pamphlet of campaign from another view, such as the study of language on semantic view, especially the lexical and conceptual meaning.
