Javanese vocabulary differences and similarities between Gresik and Malang dialect in ngoko low level

ABSTRACT

Language as means of communication always grows and develops in a society. It is used by human being to express their feeling to their society in order that they are accepted by the surrounding environment by expressing their idealism, feeling, willing and opinion, etc. Everyone as a member of society needs at least a language. They use it as a way to meet his or her needs. Moreover, they use it for other needs in a society because a society cannot be separated from its language. Consequently, language used in society is different from another as well. For instance, Gresik speakers with their culture use the Javanese with its characteristics that are different from another Javanese, Sundanese or other ethnics with their own language. Every group of people in society speaks a language differently from others although they have the same language. People who come from Gresik and those who come from Malang are slightly different in dialect, although they have one language, namely Javanese. The members of different societies or classes and groups cannot understand another dialect easily. The members of speech communities cannot use their dialects to communicate with those who are from different dialects. They even create their owned patterns and vocabularies. Therefore, the researcher thinks that it is very urgent to find out and prove different dialects in the direction of Javanese speakers in Gresik and those who are from Malang toward its vocabulary differences and similarities.

This research attempts to investigate the vocabulary differences and similarities and the special characteristics of the dialects of Gresik and Malang. The questions arise are: (1) What are the vocabulary differences between Gresik and Malang dialect, especially in meaning? (2) What are the vocabulary similarities between Gresik and Malang dialect, especially in meaning? (3) Are there any special characteristics toward the vocabulary differences and similarities between Gresik and Malang dialect? The researcher objectives are: (1) to find out the vocabulary differences between Gresik and Malang dialect, especially in meaning, (2) to find out the vocabulary similarities between Malang and Gresik dialect, especially in meaning, (3) to find out the special characteristics toward the vocabulary differences and similarities between Gresik and Malang dialect.

In conducting the research, the researcher used a qualitative method as a way to describes, analyzes and collects the data. This research would give comparison and description about vocabulary differences and similarities between Malang and Gresik Dialect, which were investigated by the observer from the informants by unstructured interviews and immediate observations.

This research reveals that: (1) between Gresik and Malang dialects, there were some words or vocabularies, which totally different each other in the part of pronunciations and the form of writing although they have the same meaning, (2) between Gresik and Malang dialects, there were some words or vocabularies which had same meaning but had a little different in their forms and pronunciation, (3) there were also a large number of Javanese vocabulary similarities between Malang and Gresik dialects, they were similar in everything, including: forms, meaning, spelling, etc.(4) there were no special characteristics towards the vocabulary differences and similarities between Malang and Gresik dialect.
