Abstract
ABSTRACT
Figurative language is an expression which needs to be interpreted in order to achieve a particular effect. In literary work its existence cannot be denied and avoided. Two examples of usage the figurative language are personification and hyperbolism. To make or to describe a thing looks alive or to do something such as what human has done is personification expression, while to do describe a thing more attractive and to express it by making exaggeration expression is called hyperbolism. The unique of figurative language is that someone cannot understand it by only reading at a glance but we have heard and known the steps firrther to understand and to comprehend the lyrics of song which contain of figurative language.
Personification and hyperbolism are also found on lyrics of songs that are sung by Malaysian singers. Siti Nurhaliza is one of them. Her songs have special place in the heart of Indonesian people, the special characteristic is she has very beautifiil voice.
The problem of this study here is about the meaning of personification and hyperbolism in a lyric song of each expression. The researcher limits the discussion of her thesis based on the meaning of personification and hyperbolism. She takes five songs that have been selected from Best of the Best siti Nurhaliza’s album.
In analyzing these songs, the writer employs a descriptive-qualitative method, because she would like to analyze and interpret the research object of Siti Nurhaliza’s songs. She also uses structuralism approach to analyze the meaning of Siti Nurhaliza’s songs. The researcher has found that not all of the lyrics of songs consisting of personification and hyperbolism. The elements of analyzing the figurative language in a song, namely: (1) meaning (what the meaning of usage the figurative language), and (2) comparison (what is being compared in expressing the idea).
The result of this study shows that personification and hyperbolism exist in some of Siti Nurhaliza’s songs. The poet to make the lyrics more vivid, interesting, imaginative and dramatic uses personification and hyperbolism.
