Politeness strategies used by the main characters of Finding Nemo Movie

ABSTRACT

Finding Nemo is an animated children movie that was released by Walt Disney Pictures in May 2003. It won Oscar 2003. It is also one of famous movie that has not only good storyline and color, but it is also full of children education, especially in language use. This guided the researcher to analyze the politeness strategies used by the main characters, then, it hopefully gives contribution to language and literature study, especially on politeness strategies and movie analysis as the expression of a real social life.

This study used descriptive qualitative design to describe the politeness strategies. The data that were in the form of utterances were collected from VCD of Finding Nemo movie by watching, listening to and comprehending them several times. They consist of 217 dialogues of main characters (Marlin, Nemo, Dory) and some friends, that were gathered into 48 data according to the setting.

,The researcher analyzed them using descriptive method that she described the data as the condition or setting in the movie. In doing this analysis, she collected every utterance that has politeness strategy. Then, she classified them into bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record strategy. She chose several examples for every strategy to be described in this data presentation to avoid the huge account of politeness strategy that occurs in the movie. After that, she checked and rechecked them with the theories and two informants.

From the data, it was found out that the politeness strategics used by the main characters of Finding Nemo movie were bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record strategy. The strategy that was mostly used is bald on record strategy. Whereas, off record was rarely used.

Furthermore, the researcher suggested to others who want to analyze this movie, to analyze the rhythm of the dialogue to show the intended meaning, taking turn technique in speaking and moral or educational view based on the language.
