A study on the character of the main character in the Novel Biola Tak Berdawai by Seno Gumira Ajidarma

ABSTRACT

Character is all the mental and moral qualities that make person different from others that are expressed in utterance and action. Character is one aspects of novel helps the plot to grow and develop throughout the story. So, it is impossible to have a plot without character. By analyzing this novel, we may inquire knowledge about variety of characters of people and determinants factor of the character. Therefore, he was interested in analyzing the character of the main character, Dewa in Biola Tak Berdawai because Dewa’s described to have some characters.

To have comprehensive understanding of Dewa’s character and determinants factor, the writer formulated two statements of research problems; what are the characters of the main character found in the novel and what are determinants factor of the characters of the main character. The objective of this study is to give description concerning to statement of research problems, which are finding what are the characters of the main character found in the novel and what are determinants factor of the characters of the main character.

The method use in this study is criticism. It means that the writer tries to describe the character of Dewa, which are in the form of dialogue, phrase, paragraph. Moreover, this study uses structural approach that only focuses on the specific object in the novel without relating them to any other elements. The data are chiefly collected from original text of Biola Tak Berdawai by Seno GumiraAjidarma.

The result of this study; firstly, Dewa is described to have eight characters, they are; Suffer, Nosy, Honesty, Solidarity, Realistic, Simplicity of Life, Alertness of Life, Respect to Other People. Secondly, the writer found two determinants factor of Dewa’s character; they are his family and society.

This study expectedly can enrich understanding of character of people in literary work. Then, it is expected that this study can contribute the next researchers to continue to analyze that novel using other elements and using other approach too.
