Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is aimed at analyzing the development of the plot, and the relationship between plot and theme in Tolkien’s 7'he Lord of the Rings-The fellowship of the Ring. The writer chooses The Lord of the Rings because it has been the great novel and the best selling during 2001-2004, it has many aspects to be analyzed and criticized.
In this research the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The writer describes and interprets the data based on the research problems.
In this study the writer is the key instrument in analyzing the primary data is taken from the novel itself and only other information relating to the topic used as a secondary data.
The writer also presents the theories that are closely related to the analysis. They are theories about theme, the relationship between plot and theme, and all of the aspects of plot that is structure of plot which contains the beginning, middle, and end. And also the laws of plot which contains, plausibility, suspense, surprise, and unity. After analyzing the data, the writer finds out some findings, there are: the development of the plot and the relationship between plot and theme of Tolkien’s The Lord of the rings-the Fellowship of the Ring.
The conclusion of this study are, the development of the plot, according with the structure of plot. In describing the whole story, the author starts in the beginning that is told the main character’s life and biography. Then middle that is showed by the main character’s great expectant, surprise, and he face conflict in his life. And then the other elements that make the plot develop are climax that is the main character has been in the top of trouble. The last is the author gives ending in the story. In The lord of the Rings he used an open plot, so the end of this story is unclear ending.
As a suggestion the writer hopes that the reader would be able to develop new ideas about other aspects which are influencing the relationship between plot and theme and the development of the plot in novel, and also the reader can used this thesis as reference for further research.
