A psychoanalytic approach to the major characters personality on kenanga by Oka Rusmini

ABSTRACT

A novel usually concerns with human being and often provides valuable massages for us through the story. What has been written on a novel is the mirror of human life. Novel is one form of literary works that often tries to reflect human life by describing the soul and the inner mind of characters. It is exposed that cognitive values in the novels seem to be psychological. By reading a novel, people can get a better view of things that happen in people’s mind and behavior (human personality). This research is conducted in order to find out the id, ego and superego in the personality of major character on Kenanga.

Psychoanalytic is a theory of human personality, it is used to know about human personal inner world (the id, ego and superego). Where they can influence human behavior, action and thought in life. There are two reasons for using this theory. First, in literature, personality is never regarded as a sequence of unrelated specification. As we know, we don’t find action or behavior without motivation or which can influence human personality. Second, by using an approach with basic principle of this theory is to interpret the text on Kenanga,

This research used descriptive qualitative research design. The instrument of research was the researcher himself, data sources are Kenanga written by Oka Rusmini published onjune 2003, by PT. Grasindo Jakarta. And also the data are from books and internet which are related to the study. In collecting the data of this study, the researcher did it by reading and understanding the story of the novel, choosing the data dealing with the problems and the purpose of the study, and conducting survey toward paragraphs in dialogues in the novel. The data collected, then were analyzed in accordance with the problem of the study.

As the results, the researcher found out the id, ego and superego that have so strongly driven and influenced to behavior, thought or personality of major character. Conflict of the id, ego and superego also happened in their psyche. By using psychoanalytic approach, the researcher can interpret and illustrate the human personality even in literary works or reality of life. Conscious and unconscious drives influenced and established the human personality.

The researcher hopes that this thesis could give contribution toward the researcher himself especially, to the readers and to the further researchers in the case of psychoanalysis.
