Abstract

ABSTRACT

There are four problems which are investigated in this study: 1) the kinds of instructional materials used by the teacher at SMAN 01 Kepanjen. 2) the teaching and learning process 3) the teaching media and 4) the teaching techniques used by the teachers in teaching and learning activities. The purpose of this study is to describe the answer of the problems, they are: to describe the kinds of instructional materials used by the teachers at SMAN 01 Kepanjen, to describe the teaching media and, to describe the teaching techniques used by the teachers in teaching and learning activity. This study is expected to have some advantages.

Theoretically, the findings of the study is expected to be the sources of knowledge in education field especially in teaching English at Senior High School (SMA). And practically, the finding of the study will give some contributions to English teachers, especially the English teachers at Senior High School (SMA). It is hoped that the findings can give new ideas or feed back for teachers to improve the quality of teaching English. At least, the results can give some worthwhile contributions to the development of education at Senior High School (SMA).

This study applied descriptive qualitative. For getting the representative data, the researcher used observation, interview and documentation. The researcher collected the data from March 2, till April 1, 2005. In analyzing the data, she uses three steps: she collected the whole data and then she discussed the whole data according to the research problems. Finally she makes conclusion from the result of the analysis.

Based on the findings of the study it can be concluded that the English teachers use various materials. There are two main materials published by Erlangga and Piranti also others publishers. But they do not use the book published by the department of education and culture, because this book is not up to date. Also the teachers do not use magazines and newspapers as additional sources.

In teaching and learning process, the English teachers teach four language skills integratedly and communicatively. In teaching language components especially structure, the teachers teach it in context. The teaching and learning process employ students centre style and communicative.

In terms of instructional media, all English teachers at SMAN 01 Kepanjen use some instructional media in teaching and learning activity such as: picture, language laboratory, tape recorder, television, video and blackboard to attract students’ attention and interest.
There are some techniques in teaching and learning process such as: song, question and answer, dialogue, discussion and explanation.
