A study on figurative language used in five poems of Chairil Anwar

ABSTRACT

Literature is an imaginative writing which can be used to express many aspect of life as emotion, idea, feeling and experience. The basic aim of literature is to give pleasure and enjoyment. In this study, it will be focused on poetry. Poetry itself also has certain characteristic; they are symbol, allusion, devices and figurative language.

There are some basic reasons for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading a poem, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature and know the background of the poems. Therefore, he was interested in analyzing the figurative language that are used in Chairil Anwar’s poems, and decided to give the title of his thesis ”A Study on Figurative Language Used in Five Poems of Chairil Anwar”. The problem of the study is; what are kinds of figurative language used in Chairil Anwar’s poems?

The purpose of the study are to acquire the answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of the poems. The scope in this study is limited on five poems, they are; Aku, Doa, Kepada Peminta-minta, Sebuah Kamar, and Selamat Tinggal.

In the second chapter, the writer explains about theories that are related to the problem of the study, the writer used some books to analyze the study.

In the third chapter, the writer explains about methodology of the study. This research employs criticism by using inductive method because the writer analyzes, interprets and evaluates the data. The step how he obtained and collected all data to be observed by reading and understanding poem written by Chairil Anwar, selecting the data that are related with the purpose of study and arranging the data systematically in accordance with the problem of the study, making record the data obtained from the data source and arranging the data in accordance with the problems of the study. After the data have been collected, they are analyzed in the following steps; 1). Identifying the data, the writer is analyzing the data of each line of the poem in order to find the kinds of figurative language. 2). Classifying the data, the writer classifies the data which includes to the kinds of figurative language. 3). Drawing conclusion based on the result of the data analysis.

In the fourth chapter, the writer presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is divided into five divisions as the following; Aku, Doa, Sebuah Kamar, Kepada Peminta-minta, Selamat Tinggal.

In the last chapter, the writer makes conclusion and suggestion. The figurative language that are used in Chairil Anwar's poems are more than one figurative language, there are eleven types of figurative language. The figurative languages which mostly appear in Chairil Anwar’s poems are hyperbole, metaphor, and personification. Finally, the writer makes suggestion from this study that it will be a great one when it is improved. For the students or the other researchers who are interested in poetry, they are suggested to analyze the other aspects like diction, message and moral value in order to acquire their advantages from these poems.
