The elements of plot found in Seratus Tahun Kesunyian by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

ABSTRACT

In understanding literary works, the readers should understand the aspects of literary works. This was very useful in order to attract the readers* curiosity so they would read the whole story enjoyably. One of the intrinsic aspects of novel that the readers should know is plot. This was because, according to Aristotle, plot is the soul of tragedy in fictional story.

In this thesis, the researcher would discuss the elements of plot and show the events in Seratus Tahun Kesunyian novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which was relevant with the elements of plot. However, to know the events, which show the elements of plot, the researcher should find all of the elements of plot that the novel had.
Basically, plot has two important parts, they are: structure of plot and laws of plot. However, they have to possess the unity of plot so that the story can be read enjoyably, clear and lifelike. In Seratus Tahun Kesunyian that had been written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the researcher found that the elements of plot here were complete.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez had described each event, which showed the elements of plot and when they appeared. Each element appeared in each part of the story, even when some parts of the conflict were jumped. However, the sequence of event could be shown clearly and easily to be followed, so that the story built up well.

The writer of this novel was able to make an interesting plot, from the simple plot to causal sequence, which enjoyed to be followed and presented the event continually of Buendia’s family. So, we could see that this novel used an unconventional plot seems like stream of consciousness. By his creativity, he made the characters of the novel have similarity to each other from the first generation to the last generation. Finally, he closed his novel by giving satisfactory ending.

The events of this novel were uncommon. That is why; the researcher should do this research carefully. Each event, which was categorized as data was analyzed by using general criteria. This was possible to give the arguments from the researcher herself in accordance with the form of the research as a literary criticism. So, she had tried to do her best for the new form of research in this faculty for her thesis.
