Abstract
ABSTRACT
Funny pictures in internet are a form of art that is one of language phenomena. It is related to life and describe the events which is happens to the society and what human beings have experienced in their life. Different from the language used in daily communication, the language used in funny picture tends to use the symbols and contain implicit meaning.
Discourse study takes pragmatic approach is a linguistic study that analyzes language use. It contains a device used to analyze how language is used in communication. The device is implicature. The implicature can explain explicitly the relationship between what is said and its meaning because the meaning of utterance is analyzed based on its contexts.
The research was descriptive qualitative approach. This study is conducted to analyze the implicature used in funny pictures on internet which was taken from November 1st 2003 until Agustus 30th 2004 in the form of utterances or sentences and pictures. The data analyzed by using Grice’s theory of implicature and his cooperative principle to guide a successful communication.
As the result, the researcher finds all kinds of implicature used in funny pictures in internet. They are generalized implicature and particularized implicature and maxims that are broken by the writer to make humor effect. First, funny pictures are classified as generalized implicature when the implied meaning of the utterance is straightforward although it can be determined from the meanings of the individual component words in the sentence but thr writer means more than he/she writes. Then, readers will understand the utterance with minimal effort without looking at the picture and drawing the special context because the writer tries to be cooperative and the goals are achieved only by understanding the utterance. And, the information is clarity, brevity, sufficiency and no futher interpretation are needed. While, funny pictures are classified as particularized implicature when the utterances of funny pictures are as a result of the context that bound it. The utterance is clarity, brevity and sufficiency of information is not given by the cartoonist to the utterance so it depends on readers’ knowledge and inference.
Finally the researcher suggest to further researcher who interest in the same field and object especially in pragmatics area in order to continue and increase the so many phenomena related to the funny picture that need to be investigated and researched.
