Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is focused on analyzing the implicatures of Islamic Javanese songs used by people in Sisir-Batu by using Grice’s theory of implicature. Implicature is part of discourse analysis study and concerns with anything that is inferred from an utterance but that is not condition for the truth of the utterance. Islamic Javanese songs are the religious songs used to remember and praise God in Islamic tradition, which the messages are often conveyed implicitly. Further, the song told about the death and the next life which must be known by the society, and understanding these songs involves comprehending kinds of implicature used.
Based on that, this research is intended to describe kinds of implicatures found in the Islamic Javanese songs and how the implicatures are used in Islamic Javanese songs used by people in Sisir-Batu.
This research is descriptive qualitative approach. In this research, Islamic Javanese songs were the data, which were taken from people in Sisir society. The totals of seven songs were analyzed based on the Grice’s theory of implicature.
The result of this research shows two kinds of conversational implicature, namely conversational generalized implicature and conversational particularized implicature, and also conventional implicature. Conversational generalized implicature is used when the information being conveyed was clear, complex information and no context was required by the listeners to understand the information in the songs. In addition, conversational generalized implicature is used ١yhen the information given tells about the invitation to do good works and always remember God in the world. While conversational particularized implicature is used ١yhen the author of songs did not give the clarity and sufficiency of information to the listeners. So, the context was required by the listeners to understand the intended messages. Furthermore, conventional implicature is used when the information being uttered gives information about the convention situation and hesitant utterance. ,The implied meanings of the information being conveyed depend on the lexical items.
Based on the research findings, it is suggested to the next researcher to analyze the song that is written not only in English language but also in another language by using relevant theory.
