Code switching used by The Teachers of Pesantren Nurul Huda Malang in teaching Kitab Kuning

ABSTRACT

Language has an important role in the teaching-learning process. The purpose of teaching leaning cannot be reached without language. The teachers of Pesantren Nurul Huda Malang use not only monolingual but also multilingual to reach the goal of teaching-learning process, especially in teaching kitab kuning. They use multilingual because the students of Pesantren Nurul Huda come from different areas that have different languages. 1’hey switch from one language to other to make all of the students understand the lessons that are explained in the class.

Based on the background above, the problems of this study are: 1. What kinds of Code switching are used by the teachers of Pesantren Nurul Huda Malang in teaching kitab kuning? 2, What are the reasons for switching the code in teaching-learning kitab kuning?

The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data are taken from the utterances of the teachers of Pesantren Nurul Huda Malang in teaching classical kitab. For gathering the data, the researcher chooses observation and conducting interview with the subject of the study.

The result shows that there are six kinds of code switching used by the teachers of Pesantren Nurul Huda Malang. They are external code switching, internal code switching, Metaphorical code switching, Situational code switching, Intersentential switching and Extrasentential switching. The teachers switch the code because of many reasons. They are topic switch, Showing anger and repetitive function. They do not switch the code because of Socializing function and linguistic Insequrity.

The writer suggests to future researchers to have a research deeply on code switching especially on the effect of code switching used by the teachers in teaching-learning process in class. Finally the researcher hopes this research can give a beneficial contribution to the students, especially for them who would like to have a research about code switching in other aspects.
