Abstract
ABSTRACT
Based on the decree of the minister of Culture and Education no 06003993. English could be started and introduced beginning from fourth grade students of Elementary. Therefore, since 1994 English has been included to curriculum as a local content subject. Nowadays, English plays a very important part, for the people who do not want to be left, because it is not only very important in the work place but also one of the elements in improving the quality of human resources. This phenomenon leads some kindergartens give English as extracurricular to their students. In line with this English proficiency cannot be obtained in a short time, because Language is best learnt in the early age, in this period the organs of speech of the children are still flexible, so it is easy for them to learn the sound system of the foreign language.
This study is aimed at getting information in teaching and learning process at TK Puri Mutiara Bunda, Sedati, Sidoarjo, especially about: (1) The objectives of teaching English at Tk Puri Mutiara Bunda, (2) The instructional materials, (3) The techniques are used by the teacher in teaching English to the students at TK Puri Mutiara Bunda.
The research design used in this study is the descriptive qualitative design. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guide, observation checklist and documentation. The subjects of the study were the headmaster, the English teacher and the students of AI TK PMB, all of the data were collected in two months from May until June 2004.
Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that there are two objectives of the teaching English at TK Puri Mutiara Bunda, the general objective is to introduce English to the children earlier in order the children will be familiar with English as early as possible and the main objective is making the children interested in English in order that they will not think English as a strange subject anymore. The materials were selected based on the kindergarten’s curriculum and the level of the kindergarten students, the material include : number, colors, days, fruits, animals, home, part of the body, My favorite, transportation, combine word, listen and draw activities, listen and color activities and songs. There are some techniques used by the teacher in teaching English such as a game, songs, quiz, repetition and drilling. To make the teaching and learning more interesting, the teacher should have various media and technique to attract the students’ attention.
