Abstract
ABSTRACT
English as an international language has an important rule to communicate each other for any purposes in the world. It is important for us to study English to fulfil these needs. One of the strategies studying English language is by analysing English sentence construction on such kinds of English written text.
XflrtgGURU magazine is one of several magazines that has cultural and scientific purposes. It has segment that tells about Australian and Indonesian experiences formulated in the form of story. This story is able to encourage people to joyfully read and understand the content of the stoiy, while the readers are also able to learn English sentences from the story. Thus, this study is focused on the English sentences used in segments of‘*Different ponds different Fish” in ^aGURU Magazine.
Related to this case, this study is intended to answer the following two research problems. The first is; what types of English sentences are used in segment of Different Ponds Different Fish in AawgGURU magazine? And the second is; how are the English sentences used in segment of DifferentPonds DifferentFish in XrirtgGURU magazine? Thus, the objectives of this study are to find out types of English sentences and to describe how the English sentences are used in the segments of “Different Ponds Different Fish”.
This study is designed using descriptive qualitative to describe English sentences dealing with the research problems. The research uses the theory of Syntax especially descriptive linguistics area to identify what types of English sentences are used in the segments. Deeper interpretation on the data is also done to find out how the sentences are used in the segment.
The result of this study shows that the types of English sentences used in the segment are simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentence. The writers use those types of sentence to make declarative functions to make an assertion of the writer’s statement. Sometimes exclamatory function used to express a strong feeling. In addition, simple sentences in the segments are used to convey the writer’s complete thought, complex sentences are used to explain the ideas of the writer, and compound sentences are used to express two or more related ideas, while compound complex sentences are used to convey the complexity of the writer’s idea.
