The implicatures used in Clekit of Jawa Pos

ABSTRACT

This study was focused an analyzing Clekit of Jawa Pos newspaper using Grice’s theory of implicature. Implicature is part of discourse analysis study and concerns with anything that is inferred from an utterance/ sentence. Clekit is part of Jawa Pos. It is funny pictures. It contains of utterance and picture that is its context. It made to entertain people after they read a lot of article in Jawa Pos newspaper and to give critic to social deviant and to invite readers to look problems that happen from the other side and looking for problem solving. The purpose of this research are to describe about what the implicature and the maxims that are used in Clekit of Jawa Pos.

The research conducted using descriptive qualitative method based on Grice’s theory of implicature. The data were in the form of sentences and pictures from Clekit of Jawa Pos. the data were selected from Clekit of Jawa Pos from April Ist until June 30* 2004.

Data finding revealed some finding covering the formulated research questions. Firstly, the implicature used in Clekit of Jawa Pos could be generalized and particularized implicature. Clekit is classified as generalized implicature when clekit is clear. The readers do not need particular context to understand the implied meaning in it. while, Clekit is classified as particularized implicature when the readers need special context to catch the implied meaning in it. Secondly, maxims in Clekit of Jawa Pos could be flouted. It is done deliberately to give comic effect. Maxims are flouted when they are overtly broken by cartoonist, such as giving information in form of rethorical strategies, namely: metaphor, rhetorical question, understatement and overstatement.

Finally, The writer suggests to next researcher to use the finding as the additional reference and comparative pragmatic research as the iinplicature is the aspect of pragmatic study. In addition, the researcher suggests to next researcher to use Grice’s theory of implicature to conduct the daily utterances, which occur naturally in certain society, it is also can be used to investigate on literary works. The next researcher also can use another theory of implicature as Wilson and Sperber’s theory of implicature or semantic approach to investigate the same area.
