Abstract
ABSTRACT
Figurative language is one of the intrinsic elements, it is very important to be included in a literary work because it has art values to make the work become more meaningful and interesting to be enjoyed.
There are many reasons that provided the basis for the writer in choosing this topic. She is interested in investigating Atas Nama Cinta by Kahlil Gibran because it is an interesting love story and its content is full of figurative language. Therefore, she is interested in analyzing the figurative language because the writer’s past experience when she read some literary works, she found many difficulties to understand it because of the figurative languages. The writer has decided to give the title of her thesis “An Analysis on Figurative Language of Atas Nama Cinta by Kahlil Gibran. She would like to find out what kinds of figurative language are used and the way how those figurative languages are applied in Atas Nama Cinta.
To find the figurative languages, the thesis writer used literary criticism. The thesis writer classified and analyzed those figurative languages. She found more than one figurative language in Atas Nama Cinta. There are five figurative language types in Atas Nama Cinta that have been discussed, they are: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and allegory. Simile is used to compare the character “I” with a philosopher, a prophet, a little stone, a king, the frightened ghost, the trembling shadows, a kid, and a bird. Metaphor is used to compare the character “I” with a tree, an idea, a beautiful woman with the spring, the people with dawn, love with unlimited thing, and the true beauty with the ray from the holiness soul. Personification is used to give the human characteristic for love, beauty, memories, loneliness, leaves, roots, earth, lake, river, light, decision, night, moon, pillars, shadows, morning, centuries, death, and sun. Hyperbole is used to exaggerate love, imagination, glance, suffer, anxious, decision, scare feeling, and freedom. Allegory is used to suffer and sorrow.
After finishing this thesis, the thesis writer is able to say that love can make us happy or in the contrary, but the power of the true love can contend all the obstacles, the trials and the suffers.
