Abstract
ABSTRACT
There are some advantages from reading literary work. By reading literary works, readers may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature, know how the writer employs the aspects of literature (especially setting) in her or his story and get some lessons from the story. Setting is the element of fiction which refers to where and when a character does an action. Setting cannot be separated from other elements of fiction because it has a role to make story becomes life-like, concrete and clear. It is associated with values, attitudes and beliefs. Therefore, the writer conducted her study on analysis on setting of Biola Tak Berdawai by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, such as she knows that there are many kinds of settings in the romance that have different functions.
The research problems in this study are: 1) what kinds of settings that are used in Biola Tak Berdawi, 2) what are the functions of settings to the whole story of Biola Tak Berdawai, The research objectives are to find out and explain many kinds and functions of settings. The writer of the study limited her study in analyzing the kinds and functions of setting in Biola Tak Berdawai,
The writer of the study presented review of the related literature in chapter II. She wrote some theories, elements, kinds and functions of setting. Reseach method of this study is presented in chapter III. In this study the writer employed literary criticism because she analyzed, interpreted and evaluated the data.
In chapter IV, she presented the data that were collected from the romance. Then, she analyzed, interpreted and evaluated the data based on the research problems. Then, in chapter V, she concluded the result of the study that Biola Tak Berdawai had neutral and spiritual settings. Besides, settings in the romance had different functions to the story. There were six functions of setting in the romance: 1) setting had functioned as metaphore, 2) setting as atmosphere, 3) setting as the dominant element, 4) time as the dominant setting, 5) place as the dominant setting, 5) setting and the whole story. The last, she gave suggestion for further researchers to criticize the other aspects of literature either intrinsic or extrinsic element of this romance.
