A thematic analysis on the lyrics of Iwan Fals Song

ABSTRACT

Literature is human creativity that is manifested into a work. A work as the manifestation or the place of creativity is various, depends on the human interest as the creator. The variation of work that is wished by the human as the creator are in the forms of work such as poetry, novel, drama, or short story. Poetry, as one of the forms of the works, takes also a role as a work of art that is created by the poet as the manifestation of his creativity.

Lyric of song as a work of art can be viewed as poetry as literary work. So, lyric of song has two roles, that is, a work of art and also literary work. Beside that, the creator of lyrics of song can be viewed as the author of poetry. In short, the singer that also becomes the creator of lyrics of song can also be viewed as the poet of poetry. Further, as one kinds of literary work, poetry consists of two elements, that is, intrinsic and extrinsic element. One of intrinsic elements of poetry is theme. Therefore, this study tries to find out and interpret the themes on the lyrics of Iwan Fals’s songs.

This thesis is a library research that belongs to literary research. In literary research there are several methods that can be used and one of them is objective structuralism. Objective structuralism is a method that is used to analyze a literary work by emphasizing its study on the text of literary work. This method is used to analyze intrinsic elements or structure of literary work, especially is poetry, in this case is the lyrics of songs.

Even though this research uses objective structuralism as a method in its analysis, it also uses qualitative approach. The function of qualitative approach in this study is as the research design, especially descriptive qualitative. The rational of using descriptive qualitative is that the form of data in qualitative approach is words or texts rather than numbers or data statistic.

Moreover, the sources of data that are used in this research are taken from the collection of Iwan Fals’s albums. Those albums are album Sarjana Muda, Album Sumbang, Album Wakil Rakyat, Album Periode 78 - 88 Album Emas Iwan Fais, and Album Best of the Best of Iwan Fais. The next step is selecting the songs whose lyrics tell about the social condition that will be used as the main data of this research. After that, those selected songs come to analysis section based on the method and theoretical studies that are required in this research.

In this research, the writer has found the themes on the lyrics of Iwan Fals’s songs, they are; theme of violence of politics is in the song entitled Sumbang, theme of patriotism or sense of loving fatherland is in the song entitled Siang Pelataran SD Sebuah Kampung, theme of development is in the song entitled Lancar, theme of the a little welfare of the teacher is in the song entitled Guru Oemar Bakrie, theme of the fired labor is in the song entitled P.H.K, theme of the life failure in fulfilling the needs is in the song entitled Doa Pengobral Dosa, and theme social discrepancy in getting the health care is in the song entitled Ambulance Zig-Zag.

The last, after knowing and getting the main points of this research, especially for the analysis and the findings or the result of this thesis, it is also recommended for the future researchers who want to continue this thesis or who want to continue the new research of course in different topic or discussion. Besides, they are also allowed to use different data sources such as poetry, drama, or novel
