Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language is used in various fields of life in which it is attached to society where people live with others. In communication process, people must fulfill the requirement of what, how, and with whom they speak. In line this fact, the Language Politeness arises as something to make the harmonious interaction. Moreover, it is to make others feel comfortable. Traders at Pasar Semampir Probolinggo, who are Madurese speakers, in this case, are one phenomenon in which they use language politeness to make business run-well and show their social values.
From the above phenomena, it is necessary for the researcher to conduct the research to answer the questions (1) what are the kinds of language politeness used by traders at Pasar Semampir Probolinggo and (2) how do the traders at pasar Semampir Probolinggo use language politeness. From those questions, the researcher intends to describe the kinds of Languages Politeness used by traders and how those kinds of Language Politeness are used. The researcher further formulated the kinds of language politeness into speech level term, address terms, honorific words and indirectness.
To answer those questions, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research. This descriptive qualitative research is used to determine the nature of a situation as exist at the time of the study. Through observation, which contains recording, taking note, and interviewing, the researcher found that there are two kinds of language politeness used by trader at Pasar Semampir Probolinggo, those are Speech Level Term, especially Middle / Engghi Enten Speech Level, address term. He also found that the traders used language politeness in the way of ensuring the consumers about price, size, design, and quality of goods He / She offered to the consumers. Besides that, they are used in the way of making a closer relation between trader - consumer and making an intimate relation. Finally, based on the result, the researcher thinks that his research is still far from the perfect one, thus it needs further researcher whose better methodology and way of getting the data.
