Abstract
ABSTRACT
Some groups live in different area and have different professions, hobbies, and ideas, automatically they use different languages. Any professional and occupational group expresses specific terms in their community, and the unique vocabulary of some occupations are usually known only by the people who use the same words. Like in hospital, the doctors and nurses used a special language to communicate with their partner. The research takes place at “Rawat Inap” because many patients need more serious treatment. ,This phenomenon makes doctors and nurses often express various terms that will not be understood by other people.
Generally, the purposes of this study are to categorize the kinds of medical terms and to describe how medical terms used by doctors ad nurses when they are on duty at “Rawat Inap” Sakinah Islamic Hospital Mojokerto. The writer hopes that this work will give beneficial contribution for sociolinguistics field. Besides, the findings would be useful to enlarge the view on medical field and to open new insight of medical terms used by doctors and nurses as ،،Rawat Inap” to the medical student.
This study used descriptive qualitative research because it is aimed to describe the meaning of medical terms and how doctors and nurses use them. In addition, qualitative research is oriented toward the search for meaning, that is the interpretations and meanings people give to event, objects and situations in their environment. To corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study.
Based on the analysis the writer concludes that medical terms can be categorized into two kinds. These are medical term related to the personal action and medical terms related to medical equipment. Besides that, medical terms also derived from English, Latin and Dutch. And the meaning of medical terms depends on the context and situation.
The writer also suggested to another researcher that these findings can be reference and as a comparative. It is recommended to the vocabulary teacher to use it as one alternative in teaching vocabulary, because there are a lot of new vocabulary that can be studied from this study especially for English for Specific Purpose (ESP).
