Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study was focused on analyzing the figurative language used by the hosts on RCTL We usually find the usage of figurative languages in a poem besides it also appears in some events in form of utterances such as football games guided by the host. It means that figurative language can turn up wherever and whenever. The researcher chose Euro Football Chipionship presented by RCTI as an official television partner. ٦ he researcher chose this object because it is an international football competition therefore there will be various and new utterances appeared. The researcher analyzed the languages (utterances) used by the hosts of football match. This study was further conducted with the following problems: 1. What kinds of figurative language are used by the hosts of football match in Euro football chipionship 2004 on RCTI? and 2. How are the figurative language used by the hosts of football match in Euro football championship 2004 on RCTI?

The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. To answer the point of utterances used by the host that is by describing what and how the figurative language used by the football’s hosts. After the data have been obtained, the researcher took several steps to analyze the data. ,They are: first, the researcher identified the figurative language. Second, the researcher categorized them into kinds of figurative language. Third, after the figurative language was categorized, he identified the function of each of them. Fourth, he identified the meaning of the figurative language also. Fifth, he made a tentative conclusion based on the result of data analysis.

rfhe researcher found the kinds of figurative languages such as metaphor, allegory, hyperbole, personification, metonymy, synecdoche, and euphemism. Hyperbole appeared in fifteen times, allegory appeared in seven times, metaphor appeared in five times, metonymy appeared in four times, synecdoche and euphemism appeared in three times, and the last personification, it appeared in two times. All of the figurative languages were used to give and evoke beautiful effect to the viewers. The researcher also gave the meaning of each figurative language in order to understand the content of the utterances.

Based on the findings of this research, the following suggestions are given: the researcher hoped that this will give contribution to the researcher himself and the readers. Even, for someone who is interested in analyzing utterances, especially 2004 European football championship. The viewers of this European championship are also suggested to focus more on the usage of figurative languages and its meaning.
