A sociolinguistics study on taboo expressions used by street boys in PPAS Hidayatulloh Surabaya

ABSTRACT

Taboo is one way in which a society and its disapproval of certain kinds of behavior believed to be harmful to its members, either for supernatural reasons or because such behavior is held to violate a moral code. Certain words in all street boys are considered as taboo. They do not use or at least, in polite company. The acts or words that are prohibited to do can reflect the particular customs and views at the street boys, however, some words may be used in certain communities and circumstances but not in others, two or more words and expressions that have the same linguistic meanings may get different treatment.

The writer of this thesis is interested in analyzing the taboo expressions of Javanese language that is used by street boys in PPAS Hidayatullah Surabaya، The purposes of the study are to find out the taboo expressions and the reasons to use it to communicate to each other, and she describes the context of taboo expressions، Descriptive qualitative research is as the design of this study. The data are collected from the expressions produced by street boys with the guide in the conversation, in PPAS Hidayatullah Surabaya. To obtain the manageable and systematic data, the writer herself became the main instrument by doing direct observation, interviewing, taking notes, and recording. In order to get valid data, the writer uses triangulation of data.

The result of the study is that the street boys in PPAS Hidatyatulloh Surabaya used taboo expressions. The expressions deal with some expressions; name of animal, name of ghost, name of immoral profession or jobs, name of certain things, name of food or drink؛ And also deal with etiquette; part of human body, personal expressions, marriage life. The last taboo expressions deal with expressions of anger; activity of eating, activity as sleeping, sexual behavior. They use taboo expressions in the context of situation, such as; getting angry, feel offended, giving rein to unpleasant thing and disappointment. Then, the reasons of using taboo expressions are; expressing their anger, giving rein to emotion, stressing the meaning of the words, coursing someone.

Finally, the writer suggests to further researchers who intend to investigate and analyze deeply the street boys because many phenomena as development science, especially the taboo expressions study, which relates to other linguistic study.
