A main character study on "Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone” by J.k.Rowling

ABSTRACT

Character is all the mental and moral qualities that make a person different from other that are expressed in utterance and action. Character as one of aspects of novel helps the plot to grow and develop throughout the story. So, it is impossible to have a plot without character. By analyzing this novel we may inquire knowledge about variety of characters of people and factors making up the character. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing character of main character; Harry Potter in Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone because Harry Potter was described to have some characters that made him became unlikely hero in his adventure with his friends.

To have a comprehensive understanding of Harry Potter’s character and factors making it up, the writer formulated two statement of research problems; How is Harry Potter’s character described in the novel and what makes up Harry Potter’s character The objective of this study is to give description concerning with the statement of research problems, which are; finding how Harry Potter’s character is described in the novel and what makes up Harry Potter’s character.

The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. It means that the writer tries to describe the character of Harry Potter, which are in the form of dialogue, phrases, and paragraph. And this study uses structural approach that only focuses on the specific object in the novel without relating them to any other elements. The data are chiefly collected from the original text of ،،Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone” by J. K. Rowling.

The results of this study; firstly, Harry Potter is described to have eight characters, they are; the boy who suffers, the boy who is popular, nosy, plucky, the boy has solidarity, the boy who is loyal, disobedient and smart. Secondly, the writer found three factors making up Harry Potter’s characters they are his family, society and companion at school.

This study expectedly can enrich understanding of character of people in literary work. Then, it is expected that this study can contribute the next researchers to continue to analyze that novel using other elements and using other approaches too.
