A study of the javanese speech level used in Surakarta Wedding Ceremony

ABSTRACT

Indonesia is one of the countries that have many kinds of culture, because it consists of regions and each region has its own local culture. Java is one of the regions that have local culture, one of which is wedding ceremony. In holding wedding ceremony, Javanese use certain Javanese speech levels as the language of communication.

This study was done, because the writer wants to know the kinds of level of Javanese speech levels used in wedding ceremony and how the Javanese speech levels are used in Surakarta wedding ceremony

In conducting the study, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method, because this study merely describes using words rather than number. This study also used descriptive method because this study describes the reality that exists in society.

To get the valid data the writer used observation and interview. The observation is done by attending some wedding ceremony, and recording the speech in wedding ceremony. To make easy lor the writer in analyzing the data, the interview was done by interviewing some people who become masters of ceremony, and the delegation of bride and bridegroom.

Based on discussion of the data, the writer found out that most of the masters of ceremony, delegation of bride and bridegroom used krama level in their speech. They considered that this level is more polite and can be understood by the people included in wedding ceremony, so the message of the speech can be received. They also think that krama is usually used in formal situation. After discussing the data, the writer concluded that the dominant Javanese speech level is krama. Besides using krama, they sometimes used madya and ngoko to make closer relation between the speaker and guests. Using Javanese speech level is easy to be understood and it is accordance with the situation. The Javanese have to differ the use of language in formal and informal situation.

From the explanation above, the writer suggests to the next researcher to use this result of this study as the previous study and they can develop it in different subject such as Javanese speech levels in Javanese puppet shadow, object, and also problems of the study.
