Abstract

ABSTRACT

The majority of Malang populations are the native speakers of Javanese. They also have more than two languages, such as Indonesian and Madurese. One group speaks different language with other. Therefore, when they communicate they tend to switch from one language to another one in order to that their conversation is more understandable and smooth. This study is about code switching between students and teachers at State Islamic Senior High School Malang I (MAN Malang I). Some students who studied at MAN Malang I came from different places and social background, e.g: they come from Kediri, Gresik, Blitar, Nganjuk,Jakarta or out of Java island, like; Sumatra, Sualwesi and Kalimantan.

This study is descriptive qualitative research because it did not deal with number at all. There some instruments used to collect the data needed , namely observation, recording and taking a note, all the instruments used to find the data about code switching that used by students and teachers at State Islamic Senior High school Malang I. The research problem of the study were formulated on two questions, First, How is the code switching used by the students and teachers? and the 2nd What are characteristics of code switching in language used by students and teachers?.

The result of the study, there are two kinds of code switching namely: situational and metaphorical code switching, beside that, there are internal and external code switching. The codes used in different situation, e.g; from serious to humorous, formal to informal etc. From the data, that the researcher found there are some reasons that influence a change of one language to the other, namely: the Indonesian language, mother tongue language, Ngoko language and polite Javanese language.

Base on the above findings data , it is suggested that several areas are open to investigate, for example: code switching is not only in School but any areas to find more data about code switching. So that these provide more comprehensive informations related to study on code s in MAN Malang I.
