Abstract
ABSTRACT
Greeting is the utterance used to open an interaction between speaker and listener. A social interaction can take place in anywhere, including school environment. The use of greeting can influence the next interaction. From that greeting it is known how the relation among the speakers which is seen from various change or the form of greeting they use.
The objective of this research is to describe the forms of greeting in both verba! and non verbal communication used by the students outside class at MTsN I Malang.
This research is descriptive qualitative. The subject is the students of MTsN I Malang and is taken randomly. The data collection is through observation, interview and also personal note. Data gotten are in the form of verbal and non verbal communication.
The result of this study is : firstly, there are ten (10) forms of greeting used by students to their teacher outside class, they are: calling, address, peace, complaint, order, invitation, prohibition, question, forgiveness, and information. Secondly, there are eleven (11) forms of greeting used by students to other students outside class, they are: calling, address, peace, praise, complaint, order, invitation, question, forgiveness, thanks expression and information. The non verbal which is used by students when they use greeting outside class are: gesture, eye contact, and facial expression. Shake hand and kiss the hand, bowed the head, bend the body are the gestures used by students to their teacher outside class. To greet other students, their gestures are: slap the soulder, wave the hand, come near and kiss each other (for female). Eye contact is also used by students to greet their teacher and other students that is shown by casting the eyes down and never looking their teacher in the face. The students also use the facial expression by raising their eyebrows, smile and grimace. All those non verbal communication are to give respect to their teacher, to make close relation to their teacher and the basic reason is because they are moslem. The reasons of the students greet other students are because they have known each other before: to get more intimate to other students and in order not to be considered arrogant student.
