Abstract
ABSTRACT
It is interesting to choose a novel - a story of someone’s daily life in a certain time - as a literary work to investigate dealing with humanity values. The reason why I choose a novel as the subject of this research is for, a novel, as one of literary works, has a uniqueness that is not owned by another literary work like a poem. It can be found a number of aspects and values - as well as in a real life - in it. One of them is humanity value.
One of literary work’s purposes is to express for humanity values. As a literary work, novel consists of humanity values. Since its composition is a reflection of human life. Through this literary work, the humanity values could be understood easily.
While the reason why I prefer to investigate the humanity values one because this selected novel entitled Ca-bau-kan written by Remy Sylado contains more about humanity values in human life. Hence, this research is about (1) the kinds of humanity values existing in Ca-bau-kan, (2) The main characters of Ca-bau-kan applying these kinds of humanity values.
Generally, the purpose of this work is to describe the humanity values in Remy Sylado’s Ca-bau-kan. Whereas the specific purpose is to find out a description of (1) Love, (2) Death, (3) Bad deed, (4) Distress, (5) Anxiety, (6) Honesty and (7) Lying, found in this great novel and a description when the main characters of Ca- bau-kan are applying these kinds of humanity values. I hope that this work will be a beneficial contribution and a reference for Literature related class also for all readers.
The method used in this study is qualitative research. Besides, it is a humanity approach. Hence, in collecting data (1)1 obtain the novel entitled Ca-bau-kan as the source of data of this study, (2) I read this novel and try to understand the message of it read it critically to exacerbate the result of understanding and (3) I mark all statements from the novel which are related to the problems as the data of this study. Then, it is time to analyze them.
After analyzing the novel, I could find out the humanity values in Ca-bau-kan written by Remy Sylado. Those humanity values are (I) Love, (2) Death, (3) Bad deed, (4) Distress, (5) Anxiety, (6) Honesty and (7) Lying.
This perfect less work expectedly can enrich the understanding of humanity values in literary work in general. Then, it is expected that this study can contribute either to further researchers to continue this study or to nowadays-human behaviors dealing with the found humanity values, Remy Sylado's Ca-bau-kan is truly a great novel to analyze. It successfully can transform the humanity values to the readers. He has delivered the beautiful words to express the humanity values. Even this work has been realized into a movie with the same title directed by NiaDinata - though it is not as good as the novel itself. One thing I could criticize this story is concerning the narrator, namely the old Giok Lan. Explicitly, there was no clear informant who told her ،ااا about Timing before being Tan !)eng Liang’s wife. On the other hand, Giok Lan narrated this story without mincing any words that she knew everything about her mother’s life.
My suggestion for the author should be, he is suggested to clarify the one who really told the story about the truth ofTinung’s life before being Giok Lan’s mother.
