The influence of setting to the development of Dr٠ Manette in Charles Dickens’ a tale of two cities

ABSTRACT

Literature is one of the most creative and universal means of communicating the emotion spiritual and intellectual concerns mankind. Literature is closely related to life, and even it is considered as the mirror of society. The study of literature is divided into three branches namely prose, poetry and drama. Novel is a fictional narrative in prose of substantial length. When we read novel, we not only get enjoyment, but we will also get new experience of the actual life.

بر Tale of Two Cities is the only Dickens’ historical novel. The background of this novel is developed from the historical background of French revolution.

This research has two problems; those are (1) What kind of setting appears in this novel, (2) How do those setting influence Dr. Manette’s character. While the purpose of this study is to describe the kind of setting appear in this novel and the second one is to describe its influence to Dr. Manette’s Character.

This research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative method because this research does not deal with the number at The instrument is the researcher herself. The data obtained four categories, which are in accordance with the discussion of the story namely the beginning, the complication, the climax and the resolution. The researcher also present related literature about setting and other theory related to the topic of this thesis.

Based on the analysis, the researcher finds out two kinds of setting in this novel. They are neutral and spiritual setting. In this novel the author mention the place and the time clearly. The researcher also finds that there are some places influence the character both in mental and physical.

Based on those finding. The researcher suggest to the next researcher to conduct some field with the different aspect of analysis with more complete data and discussion.
