Abstract
ABSTRACT
Setting is the element of fiction that can explain about place, time, or the situation and the condition in the story. Dealing with this study, the writer formulates two problems :1) How are the kinds of settings used in Sidney Sheldon’s novel “Morning, Noon, & Night”? 2) What are the functions of setting to Sidney Sheldon’s novel ،،Morning, Noon & Night”? Based on the problems, the purposes of this study are to get descriptive understanding of the kinds of setting and the functions of setting that are used in ،،Morning, Noon, & Night”.
In analyzing this novel, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method, because the writer would like to describe the real condition existing in the object of this study. The data is taken from “Morning, Noon, & Night” related to intrinsic elements, especially the kinds of setting and the functions of setting.
After formulating the problems and analyzing the data, the writer finds out some findings that there are the kinds of setting and the functions of setting on ،،Morning, Noon, & Night” novel. In the kinds of setting, there are a neutral setting and the spiritual setting. Then, in the functions of setting, the writer finds out setting as metaphor and setting as atmosphere.
In the last chapter, the writer has conclusion that there are two kinds of setting used in ،،Morning, Noon, & Night”, a neutral setting and the spiritual setting. Besides, the functions of setting used in “Morning, Noon, & Night” are setting as metaphor and setting as atmosphere. From those results, the writer suggests to further study that ،other researchers can follow this research on other aspects, such as plot, theme, or character. Last, the readers are hoped to be patient and honest in the life and too ambitious is not good for us, because we can fall into the wrong way and we will regret in the future.
