Abstract
ABSTRACT
Politeness is forms of behavior, which have been developed in societies in order to reduce friction in personal interaction. It is related to what v٠e speak, how will we speak and with whom we speak. Javanese language is a complex system. Before one Javanese speaks to another, he or she must decide on an appropriate speech style; high, middle, or low. Besides Javanese has a set of honorific referring to much matter as people, body part, possession and human action. This study was focused on observing linguistic politeness used by farmers in Ngronggot Nganjuk. The research question were formulated as follows: (1) What linguistic politenesses are used by fanners in Ngronggot Nganjuk?, How do fanners in Ngronggot Nganjuk use linguistic politeness?.
Titis research was* conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The participant and non-participant observation becomes the main instrument and the interview was as secondary. The data were taken from t١٦e conversation of fanners of crop planted in Nganjuk when interacting with people of same, lower, and, higher level. ٢٢he subjects of study were fanners of crop planted in Ngronggot Nganjuk. they are male and female, ranging in age from twenty-four until fifty years old, the education of them are elementary school, and junior high school. The analysis the data were fbnnulated as follows: (I) Data collection, collecting the data from the conversation of fanners when interacting with the same, lower, and higher level through taking note and recording. (2) Data Reduction, making identification, classification, codification of data, (3) Analyzing data (4) Discussion and conclusion.
Based on this study, it was found out that the first; Nganjuk fanners used Krama Inggil when communicating with people of the higher level to show politeness. They also ,use Krama Inggil in a fonnal situation and they use Ngoko with *he lower level, an informal situation and their relation are intimate. The second, Nganjuk fanners use six .strategies they are: seek agreement, approval, offer, wants, give (cr ask reason) and sympathy as showing positive politeness. And Nganjuk farmers use question, apologize and be pessimistic, indirectness and pretence as showing negative politeness.
Based on those findings, it is suggested for the next researchers explore more detail of other strategies on linguistic politeness based on Brown, Lenvinson and Lakoff theory
