A study on the theme of William Wordsworth's poems

ABSTRACT

Poem according to Perrine (in Siswantoro, 2002 : 02) is a kind of iangugage says more than says, it more intensely complex than does ordinary language. As the same with who study and read another literary work, we experience the same problem when we read a poem, we find it difficult to understand and respond the text also to reveal what does exactly mean and talk about in poem we read. There are some opinions say that we would be easily to understand the poem, if we found the theme of poem it self, because theme is the central idea the poet’s want to be developed in his poem. Based on that statement can be concluded that theme is the important way to understand the poem.

To find the theme is one of the most important ways to understand the poem, the writer in her thesis focus her analysis on the study of theme on William Wordsworth’s Poems. The writer wants to find the theme on Wordsworth’s Poems in order to be able comprehend the poems. In this study the writer also wants to describe the content of those poems.

Statement of the problems of this study will be found out the answer are: (1) What do the poems of William Wordsworth talk about? and (2) what are the themes found in William Wordsworth’s poems?. Whereas the objectives of this study are : (1) to find out what the poems of William Wordsworth describe about, and (2) to find out the themes of William Wordsworth’s poems.

To conduct the study, this thesis uses descriptive qualitative. As Ary (1979:295) says that descriptive studies are designed to obtain information concerning the current status of phenomenon, and directed toward determining further adds that descriptive studies may include present facts or current conditions concerning the nature of a group of person, a group of objects, a class etc. This study also part of the literary criticism that is usually regarded as the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of literary works.in literary criticism there are several method that can be used and one of them is structuralism. This method is used to analyze intrinsict element or structure of literary work, in this case is poetry.

After conducting the study, the results of this study are as follows: (1) all of the five poems describe about the nature in poet’s surrounding, and (2) all of the themes of those five poems are also about the relationship between man and nature in his life.

In this study, there are still many things that must be explored the poems generally and the themes of poems especially. For the future researchers are expected to conduct similar theme of study with more complete data and discussion.
