The characterization of elfride swancourt in Thomas Hardy's a pair of blue eyes

ABSTRACT

Characterization is simply defined as the description of character. Character is all mental and moral qualities that make a person different from the others. It is expressed in utterance and action. Character as the one of intrinsic elements of novel is an important part that makes the story lifelike. Character is also an important thing that helps the plot to grow and develop throughout the story. By analyzing this novel, we may get information and knowledge about the variety of characters of a person and the types of character. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing the characterization of Elfride Swancourt in Thomas Hardy's A Pair of Blue Eyes.

To have comprehensive understanding of Elfride swancourt’s character and the types of character, the writer formulated two statements of research problems; how is Elfride Swancourt's characterization in Thomas Hardy's A Pair of Blue Eyes and what type of character does she belong to. The objectives of this study are to give description concerning Elfride Swancourt's character and to explain the type of her character.

The method used in this study is literary criticism especially structural approach or objective approach, because character is one of intrinsic elements. The researcher would like to interpret, evaluate and describe the character in this novel. The data are collected from the original text of A pair of Blue eyes by Thomas Hardy.

The results of this study are firstly. Elfride Swancourt is described to have seven characters; artful, motherly, talented in sport, inconsistent, disloyal, dishonest, and introvert. Secondly, her types of character are more than one; they are round, major, active, protagonist, and dynamic.

This study is expected to enrich the people’s understanding about characterization in literary work. Then, it is also expected that this study can contribute the next researchers to continue analyzing the novel with broader and better discussion.
