Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language is the most important tool in social communication between people in any society. Without language, it is impossible for people to communicate with other people and do their activities fluently. Language is also a phenomenon of social life. So, it has close relationship with the structure of social and value of society. That is why the society uses different language from other society because every society has their social structure, customs and attitudes. So this different culture causes different using of language.
In this study, the writer formulated four research problems. Those are: (1) What are the similarities and the differences between terms of addresses used in Sumenep and Pamekasan? (2) What are the functions and meanings of those terms of addresses? (3) Who uses those terms of addresses? (4) What makes them different in using Madurese terms of addresses?. Based on those four problems the writer hopes that the people understand about similarities and differences on the terms of addresses.
This analysis used qualitative descriptive method. The population in this study is the people who live in Sumenep and Pamekasan districts. The informants taken in this study are five persons coming from Sumenep district and five people coming from Pamekasan district because it is impossible for the writer to ask all people in both districts and the people that used those term of addresses are same, so the writer choose these reliable informants as duty for the people. The data of this thesis is taken from the informants that always used the terms of addresses in their daily activities. Afterthat, the data were analyzed by used sociolinguistics theory untitled ،،Sociolinguistics an Introduction” by Peter Trudgill (1974)
Having analyzed the data, the writer find out that there are five similarities, those are pronouns, family terms, terms refering to parts of the body, names of person, and loan terms. The differences can be classified into pronoun and family terms. Beside that, the writer also discussed about functions, meanings and the users of the terms of addresses.
Finally, this research can be conclude that Sumenep and Pamekasan have some similarities and differences in using the terms of addresses. So, the people that used the terms must be more carefully in using the terms of addresses with whom they talked about, and the situation around it, because the terms of addresses can influence the Madurese speech level that they used. There are some weaknesses in this study, because of that, the writer hope the will be next writer that analyzed terms of addresses in Madurese more detailed.
