An analysis on figurative language used in the Novel Sang Penyair by Mustafa Lutfi Al Manfaluti

ABSTRACT

Literature is one of art works that has attractive value for the readers. Literature is one of the great creative means of communicating the emotion, spiritual or intellectual concern of mankind. Like fine music and art, fine literature is characterized by imagination meaningfulness of expression both good form and technique.

There are many reasons for the writer to choose this topic. By reading the novel the writer acquires knowledge and insight about how to appreciate literature. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing the figurative language in Luthfi’s novel ،،Sang Penyair” since she knows there are many figurative language used in the novel. The writer decided to give the title of her thesis ،،an Analysis On Figurative Language Used In The Novel “Sang Penyair” BY Mustafa Luthfi Al Manfaluthi.” The problem of the study are what kinds of figurative language used in the novel Sang Penyair and what is the dominant figurative language used?.

The objective of the study is to answer the questions this study. The writer limits her study on eight titles/chapters. The figurative language is limited on simile, metaphor, personification and hyperbole.

In the second chapter, the writer describes about the theories that are related to the problems of study. She used some books to analyze the study. Besides, she also quotes some definitions and gives conclusion.

The third chapter, she explains about the method of the study used. The step how she collected the data to. be observed by getting the novel entitled “Sang Penyair”. Besides, she reads more and more.To corroborate the data she used all of kinds of triangulation. After the data were collected, they were presented, analyzed and concluded.

In chapter four she presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is divided into eight titles which are categorized into figurative language found and the dominant figurative language. While, the dominant figurative language of the whole titles is in the end of the whole discussion.

In the last chapter, the writer makes conclusion and suggestion as follows: The figurative language found in “Sang Penyair” are simile, metaphor, personification and hyperbole. ٦٦here are 30 similes found in seven titles. Besides, there are 28 metaphors found in eight titles. There are 7 personifications found in three titles. In addition, there are 48 hyperboles found in the six titles. Furthermore, the dominant figurative language is hyperbole.

Finally the writer suggests to next researchers ،،Sang Penyair” to analyze it from another aspects such as sociocultural, aesthetic aspect, psychological aspect etc. Besides, they conduct the same theme of the study with more complete data and discussion.
