Abstract

ABSTRACT

Living in this world means to communicate. Communication needs a language system in order to transfer the idea they have not understood. Language must make contact with the outside world. This contact is what we call meaning. The meaning is used in many ways, not all of them equally relevant to language. Yet everyone who knows a language can understand what is said to him or her and can produce strings of words that convey meaning. Semantics as one language of words, phrase, and sentences, kinds of meaning also found on language in thought and activity. Al-Mahabbatain is a name of invocation group that expresses their songs in Arabic lyrics as a literary but they have translation lyrics that have many kinds of meaning.

This study is intended to investigate: what kinds of meaning are used in the translation lyrics of Al-Mahabbatain? And what are the messages found in the lyrics? To discuss every meaning in the translation lyrics of Al-Mahabbatain’s song taken from “Senandung Al-Qur’an” the writer limits six songs from the first album.

In analyzing these lyrics, the writer used a descriptive qualitative design because it does not need variable. The writer used Al-Mahabbatain cassette as the relevant source of data. After reading, listening and making record of data obtained, and also getting data from the informant, in this case the vocalist and also the translator of the lyrics, she arranged the data systematically, which are accordance with the problems of study. Having arranged the data systemically into six categories, she analyzes them in detail about kinds of meaning and the messages of each category.

The writer has found that connotation and denotation meaning mostly found in the lyrics, figurative meaning as well as symbolism, which is explained in lexical meaning. As the aspects of sentential meaning, the writer found that many sentences in the lyrics are ungrammatical, unacceptable but meaningful. Cohesion and connectedness are found as several aspects related to discourse meaning. The messages of the songs are content of many religious messages such as an invitation to pray.

The writer suggests the reader, another researcher, and English learner who wants to make this study as reference of further research, they can analyze another translation lyrics with semantic study or other branch of linguistic point of view. She expects that the study will be useful for developing the literature, especially songs. Besides she hopes that this research is made some one eager to know more about literary works especially translation lyrics of an invocation songs in accordance with semantic analysis.
