Abstract

ABSTRACT

The phenomena of language especially used in sociolinguistics are interesting to be investigated. In a society, language is used by its member to communicate with others, to express their ideas and feelings as well as maintain social relation and Personal attitudes.

If people who have different languages are communicating in English, they tend to have specific characteristics of English spoken. This occurs in Bali, because Bali is one of the famous tourism resorts throughout the world. Such as Sukowati Bali

The tourists who visit Bali interact with sellers who are native speakers of Indonesia. They use English for communication. However not all sellers are able to speak English. Therefore they use special ways for communication. This makes the sellers create special characteristics when speaking English.

Based on the background of the study, the research problems are stated in the following questions: (1) What are the characteristics of English spoken by sellers in Sukowati market Bali, (2) How do the listeners respond to English spoken by sellers in Sukowati market Bali.

The research method of this study is descriptive qualitative since the data were in the form of utterances that is analyzed descriptively. The subjects are the sellers in Sukowati market that used English in speaking. To obtain the data, the researcher spent a great deal of time observing and taking notes. Then, the collected data were analyzed to transcribe the dialogues and checking them with the data, so analyze the characteristics of the sellers spoken English and listeners responses on the
