Abstract

ABSTRACT

Market is one of places where many peoples meet together to make a transaction. Pasar Sarangan is located in recreation place, where the buyers come from different countries, villages, culture, and has different languages. It forced the traders to learn and to master more than one language. When traders make a transaction with the buyers, they may switch code or mix code. When traders switch code, they have code switching and when they mix code, they have code mixing. Code switching is the change from one language to other languages and it can also the change from one dialect to other dialects. Code mixing is the use of two or more languages together to the extent that they change from one language to others in the course of a single utterance. The previous researchers have already conducted the study on code switching or code mixing, furthermore, this research is talking about both of code switching and code mixing by title Code Switching and Code Mixing Used by Traders in Pasar Sarangan. The problem of this study is what kinds of code switching and code mixing are used by clothes traders in Pasar Sarangan and why do they use code switching and code mixing. The objective of this study is to find out kinds of code switching and code mixing used by clothes traders in Pasar Sarangan and the reasons clothes traders used code switching and code mixing.

The result of this study is expected to be able to provide theoretically and practically benefit. Theoretically, it can give detailed description about code switching and code mixing used by clothes traders in Pasar Sarangan and it can develop the knowledge of sociolinguistic. Practically, this research is expected to be able to be useful for language students, who are interested in sociolinguistic on code switching and code mixing, for language teachers, through this study, it is hoped that they can explain perfectly and clearly about code switching and code mixing and also for further researchers on same area, the result of this study is hoped to be able to help the next research on the related study. This research is limited on code switching and code mixing used by traders in Pasar Sarangan. However, this research is limited on clothes traders only, because, clothes traders are the most traders in Pasar Sarangan, and from them the most code switching and code mixing are found.

This research is descriptive qualitative research, as it concerns with phenomenon that happen in Pasar Sarangan. The sources of data were obtained from clothes traders in the form of words, utterances and dialogue. The instruments of this research are observation and interview. After the writer determined the area, writer prepared to conduct direct observation and next the writer check and recheck by interviewing the informants, at last arrange the data obtained both from observation and interview systematically which are in accordance with problem of the study. After the data have been collected, the data categorized into four categories which are in accordance with the number of weeks and each category were presented, analyzed and concluded.

Finally, there are three kinds of code switching used by clothes traders Pasar Sarangan, internal code switching, situational code switching and metaphorical code switching. There are two kinds of code mixing used by clothes traders in Pasar Sarangan, inner code mixing and outer code mixing. The reasons clothes traders used code switching and code mixing are traders want to express their disappointment to the buyer, to persuade the buyer, to be more familiar with the buyer, to express their anger, talk to another buyer, to honor the buyer, make a joke to the buyer, or traders want to imitate the languages used by buyer. This research is recommended for the readers to be able to find out kinds of code switching and code mixing in human life, especially in the market. And for further researchers are hoped to conduct the same study with different aspect and more complete data and discussion.
