An analysis of code switching used by workers of Gending Sugar Factory in Probolinggo

ABSTRACT

People who live in society will use certain language to communicate with each other to gain better understanding between them, tuthermore choosing a code ways people conform communication to their patner, code that is used to indicate people how close and familiar they are and the code we choose in our conversation is likely to indicate how we are wish to be viewed by others.

Based on this thesis entitled an analysis of code switching used by workers of Gending sugar factors' in Probolinggo, the research problems of this thesis are: (1) how is the code switching used by workers of Gending sugar factory? (2) what kind of code switching do workers of Gending sugar factory use? And (3) why do the workers of Gending sugar factory use code switching?

In this research method was descriptive qualitative because the data of this study are in the form of word, which were not statically analyzed, this research try to discribe the condition of the data naturally and didn’t deal with the numbers at all. For gethering the data I choose observation the real condition and some conversations from the subject, taking note and conducting interview with the subject.

The result of the study indicated that the workers of Gending sugar factory used code switching in their conversation work. It was found that the languages mostly used by the workers are: javanese, Madurese and Indonesia. The reasons workers used code switching are: they want to be familiar with other, they want to respond with the similiar language, they want to express their anger or disappointment, the appearance of the third speaker, and the topic change.

Finally the phenomena of sosiolinguisticts, such as code switching always happend in bilingual or multilingual society that very interesting to be investigated. I suggest to other reseachers to do a research that is related in others sociolinguistict phenomena in different area, more complete the data and discussion, so that it will add more information for the readers.
