Abstract

ABSTRACT

To live in this world means to communicate a language as a means of communication-system used by men in order to transfer this idea they have not understood. Language must make contact with the outside world. This contact is what we call meaning. The term meaning is used in many ways, not all of them equally relevant to language. Yet everyone who knows a language can understand what is said to him or her and can produce strings of words that convey meaning. Semantics is one of branches of linguistics in the study of meaning that is the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. Kinds of meaning are also found or language of songs, as a literary work. This means that language is thought and activity. The poets express their lyrics used kinds of meaning to get a good lyric in order to deliver the messages for their readers.

This study is conducted to investigate what kinds of meanings used in each line of the lyrics of the poems and the messages found in those poems.

In analyzing these poems, the writer used descriptive-qualitative a method because it does not need variable. The writer used the original poems as the relevant source of data. After reading and making record of data obtained, and arranging the data systematically with the problem the writer collect the data.

The writer has found that connotation and denotation meaning are mostly found in the lyrics, .figurative language as well as repetition, which explain the lexical meaning. And it can be found semantics relation and syntactic sentence which are frequently appeared in lines of lyrics as the expressions of sentence meaning, coherent as one of aspects of discourse meaning used. The messages of the poems are person has to realize about what he or she acts in his or her life. There is nothing we love will exist longer, family, friends, and even wealth. How things can be change in a day, or just in the blink of an eye.

The writer suggested the readers, other researchers, and English learners who want to make this study as reference or for further researches; they can analyze another style of poems with semantics study or in other branch of linguistics point of view. She expects that this study will be useful for developing literature, especially poems. Besides, she hopes that this research made someone eager to know more the literary works in accordance with semantics analysis.
