A study on english loan words used in articles on opinions in Kompas

ABSTRACT

One of the developments of society is language and language relates to the words of language users or the people use in their communication. As open society, Indonesian borrows many words from English because English is as international language. Those borrowing word is to enrich the vocabulary of the Bahasa Indonesia. The words that are taken over from English or non-native language into Indonesian or native language and adapted with Indonesian rules is called as loan word.

The research concerns with the process of forming English loan words and the kinds of meaning changes English loan words used in articles on opinions in Kompas. The way of process of forming English loan words is analyzed to Chaer category division of loan processes and the kind of meaning change follows Fromkin and Rodman three meaning changes of English loan words.

This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method, which is applied in data analysis. The data are collected from the words in articles on opinions in Kompas from May 1st until May 31st 2003.

From the analysis, the researcher finds that an article on opinions in Kompas uses many loan words from English and there are two results of this analysis. First, There are three processes of forming English loan words, they are the processes are borrowed by adaptation of spelling and pronunciation, spelling and pronunciation are fully borrowed and by translation. Second, English loan words in articles on opinions in Kompas are using three kinds of meaning changes; they are broadening meaning, narrowing meaning, and shift meaning.

Based on the findings, it is recommended for the journalists to consider in understanding the words by translation. In addition, it is also recommended for the next researchers who conduct similar study to analyze deeply on theory of loanwords study to other linguistic study.
