Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this study, the writer focused on taboo language used by people in Joyoboyo Terminal Surabaya, especially used by the drivers, his crews and the sellers. The writer hopes that this study gives a contribution toward the Sociolinguistics study, especially on taboo field.

This study is descriptive qualitative research as it concerns with the description of taboo language expressed in Joyoboyo Terminal Surabaya and the situation when taboo language are spoken by them.

The design requires data presenting in the form of words and phrases rather than numbers. In order to obtain the valid data, the writer applies observation instrument through recording (Taboo utterances used between the drivers and other drivers; and between the drivers and the sellers) and taking note of every possible taboo language and the situation which could not be recorded.

The result of tliis study is taboo language, which are used by the people in Joyoboyo Terminal area and it is classified into two categories, those are: taboo language related to sexuality: SUSU (a woman’s breast), penihil (part of a woman’s breast), ambung (kissing with fill1 of desire), kontol (a man’s penis) and taboo language related to oral violence that is divided into three kinds, those are: a. related to behaviour: jancok, nggacor, kablok, handrek, kapok, sokor, klopa-klopo, resek, and goblok, b. related to animal: celeng (forest pig), kirik (dog),and jangkrik (cricket), c. related to bodily function: lambe (lips), rai (face), congor (animal’s lips) and dobol (anus).

Based on the data analysis, the writer has some suggestions for the members of society that do not look just on tlieir appearaitce and speech behavior only. Try to look at their positive side that they have high solidarity in friendship. And for other researcher, the researcher hopes that they will study on terminal field because there are other topics of language that is interesting to be studied.
