Semantic analysis on the lyrics of Roxettes Songs

ABSTRACT

Literature is an imaginative writing that can be used to express many aspects of life, such as emotion, idea and experience. The aims of literature is to give pleasure, enjoyment and close relation toward life. One form of literature is poem. It can be expressed in a song to show people’s deep feeling. Many things can be expressed in a song and it can represent the thought, the feeling and the willingness of the composer. Furthermore, a composer also has great many choices how to express his idea.

There are some reasons that make the writer choose this topic. By listening to the song, we get knowledge about appreciates literature and the background or themes of poems. Therefore, she was interested in analizing the kinds of meaning and the themes used in Roxette’s Songs. The writer dedicated to give the tittle of her thesis “Semantic Analysis on The Lyrics of Roxette’s Songs”.

The problems of this study are what kinds of meaning involved in Roxette’s songs ? and what are the themes found in Roxette’s songs ? The writer limit the discussion of her thesis based on the kinds of meaning and the themes. She takes eight songs which have been selected from two Roxette’s albums, namely Crash / Boom I Bang / and The Ballad Hits.

This study uses descriptive qualitative method, because he would like to analyze and interpret the research object of Roxette’s songs. The steps how she obtained all the to be observed by collecting sources of data from Roxette’s cassettes and from internet in www.roxette.com, selecting the songs which contain of semantic, reading and listening to the lyrics to understand the content of the songs, making records the data obtained, conducting and analyzing the collected data and make conclusion.

The data of this study are analized in the following steps. First, categorizing the data into eight categories accordance with the number of songs. Second, presenting, analyzing and concluding the data of each category. Lastly, the tentative conclusion is made.

The results of this study show that there are three kinds of meaning used in Roxette’s songs, they are lexical meaning, sentential meaning and discoursial ١ meaning. And the themes, Roxette describe about love in almost of all his songs.

The writer suggest the future researchers, especially the student of Islamic University of Indonesia - Sudan (U11S) Malang conduct a study that have similar theme with this study, but it has more complete data and discussion. Beside that, they are able to develop this study by using other types of linguistic aspects in the lyrics of Roxette’s songs, which can be find in some of their songs.
