Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study was focused on analyzing utterances made by the cake sellers and buyers using Grice’s Theory of implicature. Implicature is a part of discourse analysis study and concerns with meaning that is inferred from an utterance or sentence. The utterances that were made by cake sellers and buyers in their conversation were the result from different mother tongues and the information were often conveyed implicitly. Based on the background, the research about a study on the implicature used by cake sellers and buyers in traditional market Dinoyo Malang was conducted with the following problems; (1) What are the types of implicature used by cake sellers and buyers in traditional market Dinoyo Malang, (2) How do they use implicature?.

This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method based on Grice’s theory of implicature. The data were in the forms of utterances from the cake sellers and buyers’ conversation from April 10 to May 30, 2003. The data were taken using observation and interview.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research question. First, the implicature used by cake sellers and buyers in traditional market Dinoyo Malang could be conventional and conversational implicature. Second, conventional implicature was used when the information being conveyed was convention situation and hesitant utterances using lexical item. In addition, generalized implicature was used when the information being conveyed is clear, complete, and using general word whereas particularized implicature was used when the information of cake sellers and buyers’ utterances are unclear, incomplete and using specific word.

Based on the findings, this research can be used as additional reference for students who study discourse analysis especially about implicature by using Grice’s theory to have comprehensive analysis. In addition, it is recommended for the next researchers to conduct research on the utterances or statements of advertisement on the television, radio, and etc
