Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nida and Taber (1982) state that translating is a process of reproducing in the receptor language, the closest natural equivalence of the source language message, first, in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style. Therefore some problems arise from this area. Newmark (1991) also found that translating was the act of translating meaning of a stretch or unit of language, the whole on a part, from one language to another. In order to complete the mentioned works, this study focuses on the appropriateness of the translation version from English into Indonesian especially on the appropriateness of Islamic terms translation version.
Taking Ali Unai’s “The Resurrection And The Afterlife” and its translation by Sugeng Hariyanto and Fathor Rasyid “Makna Hidup Sesudah Mati Kebangkitan Dan Penghisaban”, as the object of analysis, the present study is aimed at identifying and analyzing the appropriateness of Indonesian translation version used by the translators in translating Islamic terms found in Ali Unals “the Ressurection and the Afterlife” into “makna Hidup Sesudah Mati Kebangkitan dan Penghisaban”
This study is a descriptive qualitative research, which is primarily directed to describe the appropriateness of Islamic terms translation version. Eight chapter riches with Islamic terms are taken as the research subject.
One hundred sentence groups are involved in the comparison of original sentences and their translations to find out the appropriateness of Islamic terms of translation version in the translating process. The result shows that each of Islamic terms An analysis on translation of islamic terms from the Resurrection and the Afterlife into Makna Hidup Sesudah Mati Kebangkitan dan Penghisaban is appropriate. This lead to the conclusion that the translator prioritizes the message and naturalness of the translation or readeship oriented.
One hundred Islamic terms with its translation are identified from the research subject, which can be further stated that all of them is appropriate. This also leads to the conclusion that the translators try to transfer the Islamic terms on English text into smooth natural Islamic terms Indonesian language, in order to give the proper meaning of certain key terms related to Islam that most of them are adapted from Arabic language. This means that they choose the strategies based on their purposes to translate a religious book. From the last discussion, it can be concluded that the appropriateness of the Islamic terms translation version into Indonesian in its translation book from the proofreaders’ opinion is very good (in choosing the Indonesian version). They agree with the translators, because the translators are able to transfer the words or expressions related to general Islamic terms which exist in both target language (TL) and source language (SL) culture, as well as the existence of the meaning in target language and the degree of importamce of the words, phrases and sentences for totally of the text.
Based on the discussion and conclusion, it is suggested that the teaching of translation should the teaching and practical steps in translating different kinds of genres and special units on cultural background or cross-cultural undestanding of the languages most of the students will work within their real translation practice.
For translators, it is suggested that they should anticipate similar problems and consider the tendency of the strategy and appropriateness in choosing meaning or strategies in translation process. In addition, it is also suggested that they should try out general strategy or at least include it into their strategy reservoir in their translating activities.
For other researcher, it is advisable that they do other researcher to experiment general strategy to see its effectiveness in relation to the type of text and purposes of the translation. Similarly, other researchers suggested to survey and analyze other texts and its translations. Next, it is advisible that further researcher analyzing in terms of translation strategies used to see whether the strategies involved differ accordingly be done. Finally, it is also suggested that other researcher discuss and analyze other translation texts with different purposes conducted with the same focus, i.e. translation strategies, the appropriateness of translation version. Such researcher will empirically reveal whether the choice of strategies or the appropriateness of the translation version is influenced by the purposes.
