Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this study, the writer wants to investigate the Javanese language used in wedding ceremony. The writer used qualitative, because this study merely describe using words rather than number. Therefore, this study used descriptive method because this study describes the reality that exists in society.

This study was done, because the writer wants to know the kinds of level of Javanese language that are used in wedding ceremony. In Javanese language, there are three levels of Javanese language. First, is ngoko, second is madya and third is krama. In every level was divided into sublevels. The writer also wants to know the reason of using Javanese language especially for master of ceremonies, the delegations of bride and bridegroom in wedding ceremonies.

To get the valid data the writer used observation and interview. The observation is done by attending some wedding ceremonies and recorded the speech in the wedding ceremonies to make easy for the writer in analyzing the data. The interview was done by interviewing some people who become master of ceremonies, delegations of bride and bridegroom to know more about Javanese language and to know their reasons in using Javanese language in wedding ceremony.

Based on the discussion of the data, the writer found that most of master of ceremonies, delegations of bride and bridegroom using krama level in their speech of wedding ceremonies. They considered that this level is more polite and can be understood by the people included in wedding ceremonies, so the message of the speech can be received. They also think that krama is usually use in formal situation.

After discussing the data, the writer concluded that the dominant Javanese language level is krama, besides using ngoko, to make closer relation between the speaker and Guests, to avoid the tense situation, they also sometimes used madya. Using Javanese language is easy to be understood and it is accordance with the situation. The Javanese have to differ the using of language in formal and informal situation.

From the explanation above, the writer has some suggestion for Javanese and non-Javanese attend to the rules in using Javanese language to avoid misunderstanding and to appreciate others. The writer also suggests to Javanese generation to apply Javanese language, to keep it from extinction, even though they live in modem era, they may not ignore their own culture, and finally the writer suggests to the next researcher to use this result of this study as the previous study, and they can develop it in different subject, object, and also problems of the study.
