Abstract

ABSTRACT

There are some informal language varieties used by each group of people. There is language variety used by a group of people based on the differences of sociological variety, it is called sociolect. One of the sociolects is slang. The way to form slang is rather unique, such as: use of the word "ebes” to mean “orang tua” (parents) “silup” to mean “polisi" (policeman) etcetera.

This study focuses on the word-formation processes of driver slang used by AT drivers in Tidar station. Moreover, this study also presented about review of the related literature like informal language variety, definitions of slang, the word- formation processes of slang, the functions of slang or the reasons why people use slang, the situation when slang is used, the users of slang and previous study.

This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the study were AT drivers in Tidar station. Source of the data were the words of slang. Research instruments used to get the data were non-participant observation and structured interview. The data were then analyzed by identifying, classifying, describing of the word-formation processed used by AT drivers in Tidar station and drawing conclusion.

It was found that there were some words of slang used by AT drivers in tidar station. The word-formation processes of slang found in the field ١vere back slang, creating, metathesis, use existing words, clipping and borrowing. The way to know the word-formation processes of slang is not difficult although it is rather unique.
